By Ruben Morales Iglesias: Seeking efficiency and effectiveness, the Belize City Council is merging the Traffic Department and Special Constable Unit into a new organization, the Enforcement Department, effective Monday, August 1, 2022.
The Law Enforcement Department will be sub-divided into four units: the Traffic Unit, the Parking Meter Unit, the Homeland Security and Discipline Unit and the Commerce and Liquor Licensing Unit .
You’ll know them because all Department of Law Enforcement personnel “have received new standard black and white uniforms and accessories that will help them carry out their duties,” the Belize City Council said.
All members of the Law Enforcement Department will now be special constables and will have the power to arrest.
“To ensure that all law enforcement officers are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to perform their duties, all members of the department are sworn in as special constables after completing training provided by the Belize Police Department,” the Belize City Council said. .
Members of the Law Enforcement Unit were trained in constitutional rights, traffic law, powers and methods of arrest, intoxicating liquor licensing, report writing, judicial duties , notice of proposed lawsuits, etc. For officers who had already been sworn in, the training served as a refresher course.
“With the newly strengthened law enforcement team, Belize City Council looks forward to working with the residents of Belize City to protect our community and ensure we are all acting within the law,” said Belize City Council said.
