Bring a sword to a spell fight in the New World

In a typical MMO, you will often find yourself unable to use certain weapons solely depending on the class you choose. Warriors specializing in melee attacks will not have access to spells, while spellcasters will be denied access to ranged weapons. If you want to experiment, you have to start all over again.

This is not the case in the New World. Amazon Games’ upcoming MMO throws the courts out the window, instead letting you choose which weapon you feel like wielding, whenever you feel like it. You can spend hours mastering the Warhammer while carrying a musket on your back and a staff in your inventory, which could come in handy when you’re partying.

But how do these different fighting styles interact and how do you know which one is right for you? To give you a head start on the rest of Aeternum, ahead of New World’s Closed Beta which kicks off on July 20, we’re taking a look at the three main fighting styles and what you should expect from them.

Melee

If you like to get close to your enemies, then New World is happy to help. With swords, axes, axes, and even war hammers to choose from, you’re sure to find something that will keep a smile on your face as you take down legions of beasts in Aeternum.

Melee combat is perfect for anyone who wants to deal massive damage to enemies as quickly as possible. Each weapon behaves differently, and you’ll unlock different abilities as you master each one. War hammers, for example, are useful for stunning and knocking back enemies in a small area, but are slower to attack, while rapiers allow you to inflict a bleed effect on enemies and inflict a burst of fire. single target hits, but lightly. less damage in exchange for faster attacks.

Whichever melee weapon you choose, you won’t just click on an enemy and wait for them to die of auto-attacks. You’ll need to chain your own combo attacks, incorporating abilities into your strikes to make the most of status effects and ailments. And unless you’re wearing solid armor, you’ll also need to block and roll to avoid taking too much damage from your enemies. Just keep an eye on your stamina gauge when blocking – keep your guard too long and you’ll find yourself exhausted and unable to fight back.

There are some really powerful weapons for melee fans. Sword users can expect to wield Reconciliation, a powerful blade that deals magical damage and is especially powerful against the Corrupted. Meanwhile, Hammer fans can get their hands on Parabellum, which ignites enemies and deals bonus damage to unharmed enemies.

Ranged combat in the New World comes in two flavors: bows and muskets. Bows are best suited for fast and precise attackers who wish to inflict a variety of status issues on their enemies. Muskets, on the other hand, are slower and more powerful, focusing on skills related to taking out enemies and setting up traps to lure enemies.

Whichever you choose, your place on the battlefield will be as far removed from the action as possible. You’ll need to focus on your objective when using ranged weapons, leaving yourself open to attack from your blind spots – or whatever happens to rush past your attacks. Still, you’ll get an added bonus in that you can deal critical damage when you do a headshot, so taking the time to aim correctly really pays off.

Archers should keep an eye out for the Legendary Longsight Bow, which can shock enemies when an arrow lands on the target. Musketeers, meanwhile, can possibly get their hands on Cryptic Message, a musket that deals bonus damage if you have an active debuff against you.

Magic

Magic is everywhere in Aeternum, and as long as you have a staff in hand and mana available, you can use it however you want. Staves come in two forms: healers can use life staves to help themselves and their allies stay alive, while destructive mages can use firesticks to wreak havoc on their enemies. You can even wear one of each and switch between them in the middle of battle, which helps you keep the direction of the fight in your favor.

Regardless of your handling, you will need to be very careful about your position in a battle to make sure your magic is actually useful. Most of the spells you will use require some casting time, immobilizing you in place and leaving you wide open to attack before you can cast a spell. These spells can also affect large areas instead of just one target, so you’ll need to aim these spells in the right places to make sure they deal as much damage as possible or heal as many allies as possible.

The tradeoff is that these spells can be totally devastating. Launch a meteor shower with the legendary Agony Fire Staff and get ready to watch your enemies catch fire as they are struck again and again by giant flaming boulders. Or ignite your friends with a beacon spell from your life staff – perhaps the Newfound Longing, if you’re lucky – to not only deal damage to your enemies, but also heal any allies nearby.

No matter how you like your fight, New World has plenty of ways to make it fun for you. And even if you decide after 50 hours that you’re done playing with swords, there’s no need to start over – just grab a bow or stick and come back.
