The Town of Mount Vernon is looking for a maintenance worker | Jobs in facilities and maintenance

The purpose of this position is to maintain the City’s grounds, streets, buildings, mechanical equipment, water and wastewater plants, and distribution and collection systems by providing labor manual and physical work in the assigned division.

Essential functions:

  1. Maintains lawn and landscaping areas on city property using lawn care equipment such as lawn mowers, handsaws, mowers, shovels, chainsaws, trimmers -trees and hoes.
  2. Maintain city-owned facilities by changing light fixtures or bulbs; assistance in the repair of plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment; do general carpentry; The painting; cleaning, interior and exterior of the facilities; general concierge; etc
  3. Maintains roads in good condition for motorists by operating jackhammers, tamping machines and other similar equipment; patch the holes and cover with new asphalt; remove and lay the brick; maintain curbs, berms and easements; and provide traffic control during maintenance.
  4. Ensures preventive maintenance of service vehicles and equipment by changing oil, filters, bulbs, belts, etc.
  5. Maintains and repairs storm sewers and drainage pipes using shovels or operating power-driven machinery such as jackhammers, snow groomers, or other similar sized equipment.
  6. Helps maintain and repair water and sewage services, such as pipes, manholes, valves, hydrants, etc. above and below ground using shovels or operating power driven machinery such as jackhammers, snow groomers or other similar sized equipment.
  7. Completes necessary work reports and maintenance logs.
  8. Demonstrates a continuous effort to improve operations, reduce turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality and consistent customer service.
  9. May require performance of other essential functions depending on location or assignment.
  10. May be required to operate the loader of a backhoe and skid steer loader, in storage areas, to load trucks only, without receiving compensation from the operator.

Acceptable education, training and experience: This is an entry level position requiring basic literacy and math obtained through a high school diploma. Holder must possess a valid Ohio driver’s license. A commercial driver’s license (CDL) must be obtained during the probationary period.

Working Parameter: The duties of this position will be performed throughout the City of Mount Vernon. The holder may encounter any type of environmental conditions: hot, cold, humid, indoors, outdoors, underground, wet, humid, dry, noisy, dirty, oily, air-conditioned, sudden temperature changes, etc. The incumbent will be required to work alone, with others, under stress, with minimal supervision and to deadlines. May oversee the work assignments of approximately 5 seasonal maintenance workers.
