Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Education Minister, said the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram (IISER-TVM) must lead in combining traditional knowledge with a modern approach in line with national policy. of Education (NEP) 2020, while addressing the convocation ceremony of the 10th class of IISER-TVM students.
“IISER Thiruvananthapuram’s interdisciplinary approach to learning is fully aligned with NEP 2020. Science-based, new science-based solutions to the problems facing humanity is what society expects from a institution of the stature of IISER-TVM. The institute must lead by example by combining traditional knowledge with a modern approach,” said the Union Minister.
According to the official statement, no less than 204 BS-MS students, 30 PhD students and six graduate integrated doctoral students as well as six students received MS research degrees during the ceremony.
During the event, Pradhan further stated that society expects new scientific solutions to the problems faced by humanity from an institution of the stature of IISER-TVM. He noted that the art and science of Kalaripayattu, the oldest form of fighting, is one such ancient and traditional knowledge of Kerala.
“The rich traditional knowledge of Kalaripayattu has remained with Kalari Gurus with very limited scientific support of oils, postures, techniques and health benefits. NEP 2020 seeks to re-emphasize these rich Indian traditions. The system Indian knowledge base needs to be revitalized. NEP 2020 seeks to align traditional knowledge with scientific studies to validate what is mentioned in the Vedas, Puranas and other such repositories of knowledge,” said Pradhan.
The statement further adds that Professor JN Moorthy, Director of IISER-TVM, presented the report on the activities of the institute and said that IISER is the first to launch the two-year master’s programs which align with the mandate of NEP-2020. .
