Fall marks campaign time for the United Way, our local United Way Hastings and Prince Edward have chosen the umbrella as this year’s symbol. Why the umbrella? Because United Way Hastings & Prince Edward is an umbrella organization that provides support and funding to over 51 local agencies and 93 programs. Over the past 19 months throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, thousands of vulnerable people have continued to be assisted by United Way-funded agencies.

Volunteering and information Quinte has been a funded agency for over 50 years; United Way HPE funds our recruitment and orientation program and our community and youth initiative. United Way is also a funder of the Ontario 211 program. The goal for this year’s campaign is $ 1,950,000.

Funding received through Centraide has helped our organization maintain essential programs. To date, Volunteers and Information Quinte has recruited and referred locally over 799 volunteers since the start of the pandemic, which equates to over 192,000 volunteer hours. These hours equate to more than $ 3,000,000 in savings for organizations providing essential services and supports. Our volunteer database has received over 30,000 inquiries for volunteer positions in Hastings and Prince Edward counties and we continue to see an average of over 15 volunteer applications each week. Our agency offers volunteer recruitment to over 275 HPEC non-profit organizations. Over the past nine months, we have had a more than 75 percent increase in inquiries to 211 regarding required personal service programs in our area.

Every dollar donated to United Way HPE stays local and ensures that individuals have access to affordable food programs, tutoring and mentoring programs, transportation to medical and doctor’s appointments, after-school programs and health. list goes on. Volunteer opportunities to choose from include:

United Way HPE is currently looking for people interested in selling 50/50 tickets to the Belleville Senators home games. The time commitment is approximately three hours from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and proof of vaccination is required.

St. Matthews Food Cupboard is looking for volunteers to help with their pantry on Tuesdays from 10 am to 2 pm. Tasks include assisting in recording inventory.

The Trenton MFRC is currently looking for volunteers to help with its virtual homework assistance program. Volunteers help with weekly homework or homework for children in grades 4-8. Volunteers required for math, English, reading, writing and French.

VON Meals on Wheels needs volunteer drivers and passengers to deliver meals to customers. Volunteer at least once a week for an hour on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday between 11 a.m. and noon. Drivers are also required for their transportation program on local and long-distance roads.

Regent Theater is looking for people to help around the theater with odd jobs. If you’re interested in getting involved but aren’t sure what you want to do, this is the place to apply!

The John Howard Society is looking for volunteers for its Visitor Center. As a volunteer, you will be expected to assist staff with tasks such as responding to shower and laundry requests, welcoming and collecting guest information at the main entrance, and maintaining a relaxed approach to the reception environment.
